I (Robert) wasn’t always a florist. For years, I worked as an electrician, hands-on, precise, and practical. Then Hurricane Andrew hit Miami and destroyed my home. My mother owned a flower shop and asked if I wanted to work with her while I got back on my feet. What started as temporary became a lifelong passion. After five or six years, I bought her out and ran that shop myself.

The story of how I got into flowers might sound more dramatic than why I opened Midtown Flowers, but the reason was simple: I missed it. I missed the creativity, the colors, and the satisfaction of helping people express love, sympathy, and joy through flowers. There’s nothing else like it.

Today, my wife Dayana and I own and operate Midtown Flowers in Naples, Florida. We’re a husband-and-wife team who personally handle every order that leaves our shop. Dayana is a gifted floral designer, and together we’ve built a reputation as one of the most trusted Naples florists for weddings, everyday occasions, and same-day flower delivery. Beyond us, we have two dedicated delivery drivers and a seasonal designer who returns each winter. During the holidays, we bring on extra help when possible, but finding skilled floral designers is harder than ever. Many people want to deliver or answer phones, but designing flowers requires patience, artistry, and endurance.

My day starts early, checking emails, returning calls, and making sure every bloom is fresh. Before we touch a single order, the shop must look its best. Walk-in customers should see something beautiful the moment they step through the door. I restock the coolers, replace any tired arrangements, and prepare for the day’s deliveries. Every design has to meet our standards for beauty, freshness, and craftsmanship.

My military background helps more than you might think. The discipline and attention to detail I learned in service carry over to running a floral business. Floristry might not sound stressful, but it’s consistently listed among the most demanding jobs in the country. Weddings, funerals, and holidays all bring immense pressure; everything must be flawless and on time. After more than 20 years in this business, I understand exactly why.

Then came COVID, and the flower industry changed overnight. Farms in Holland, Colombia, and across the world had to destroy crops because shipping halted. I’ve visited those farms myself. Before, florists could rely on open-market buying. Now, if you don’t pre-order, you don’t get it. The entire system became about planning, persistence, and relationships with growers. It tested every florist’s adaptability, and we made it through by staying flexible and keeping our promises to customers.

Even with those challenges, I still love this work. We collaborate with the Naples Botanical Garden and other local organizations for community fundraisers. At one event, artists and florists teamed up—painters, sculptors, and floral designers like us—to create art and arrangements that were auctioned for charity. We also partner with local churches, offering discounted floral designs for services and special occasions. Giving back to Naples, the community that supports us, means a lot to us.

The most rewarding part of this job is solving problems and making people happy, often on short notice. I’ve helped brides whose florists canceled days before the wedding and families who needed sympathy arrangements immediately. Yesterday, for example, a customer ordered a Persian Garden bouquet with lavender roses. We didn’t have any lavender in stock, so I called her and offered deep pink instead. She thanked me for reaching out. It reminded me that not every florist calls first, but we always do. That personal touch is what keeps customers coming back.
